Biofuel from Yeast – researchers modify substance to create workable fuel source

Biofuel still sounds like a thing from science fiction but it’s real and comes in a variety of forms. Researchers are working on a way to turn yeast into car fuel to create a sustainable energy source that can be implemented without a fuss.

Yeast already creates a fuel substance, ethanol. It’s a super common chemical. You absolutely have some in your house already which you refer to by its common name of alcohol. It’s not new information that this is a fuel source, it’s been around forever, but we can’t just pour it in our gas tanks and expect our cars to go.

In new research, scientists have tweaked the yeast so that it produces a substance that is closer petroleum. The closer it gets to what we use now, the easier it will be to adopt as a viable fuel source in existing technologies. They’ve got a long way to go before this becomes a new fuel source but the work is being done.
