BioLite – awesome electricity producing camping stove

This most excellent BioLite camping stove contains some very clever thermoelectric technology which converts excess heat to electricity to power both a turbo fan and an external 1–2 watt USB device charger for mobile phones and LED lanterns. The stove can boil a litre of water in around 4 minutes once started, which compares well to those gas powered stoves you see in camping shops. It heats to 1400 degrees at peak, and yet has a cool to touch body.

It’s a very cool idea indeed, and since the thing uses underbrush as fuel, it’s perfect for hikers and sociopaths who want to leave the grid and live free. Cool demo video. Cool demo video II. [Via]

  Boils 1 liter of water in 4 minutes. # • Kindles in 2 minutes # • Burns twigs, sticks, underbrush, pine cones, pellets, rice husks # • Folds for easy packing # • 7.5” Tall X 4.75” Diameter # • Weighs 1lb 10oz

  • Neat no carbon footprint, somebody done thier homework.

    • Yeah, apaart from the mining of the iron ore and rare earth metals for the steel, the extraction of oil for the plastics, the various rare earth elements for the battery and thermocouple – oh and the implied 'footprint' of the deveice~(s) that its supposed to charge. Not to mention transport costs.

Oh and a great heat/electrical energy conversion efficiency 5000:1 (5kW for about 1 watt of power).

No carbon or any other footprint then…

Yes it has potential for 'developing countries' (there is an oxymoron if ever there was one) but check out the International Society for Ecology and Culture for appropriate technological development.

  • Very similar to the classic Zzip Sierra Stove, and the "Survival Stove" listed here

Although both of those use batteries.

The Kelly Kettle is another item that fits in this category.
