It looks as though the good folk at EyeNetra, which we reported on a while back, have done a bit of a pivot and re-launched themselves as an alternative eye testing service for lazy Westerners. If you’ll remember the original idea was to supply affordable eye tests for the developing world, using just a smartphone.
For whatever reason, that vision has now morphed into a commercial operation called Blink which is only operating in New York to offer a home visit eye test service for people who can’t be bothered to visit a proper optometrist. We’re not seeing a whole lot of value in paying $75 for a home visit like this, just because the guy who visits you – a rather tweely named ‘visioneer‘ – has some cute gadgets to use on your living room table.
It’s not that we think it’s a bit of a retrograde step or anything, it’s just that it really doesn’t help any of the millions of poor folk out in remote rural areas of the world who have no access to any eye care of any kind. Oh wait, maybe that’s the problem afflicting Brooklyn? Whatever.
