Boeing’s latest fuel efficient family of planes – the 777X

Fuel efficiency has become increasingly crucial for a struggling airline industry. With rising costs for fuel passed on to disgruntled passengers, airlines are working to create better, faster and more fuel efficient planes.

Boeing announced their latest family of airliners – the 777X – at the recent Dubai Airshow. Innovatively designed with folding wing-tips that will increase wingspan, Boeing says it will be both the largest and most efficient twin-engine jet in the world. Its wings are based on those of the 787 Dreamliner and will stretch to 233 feet (71 m) when extended. With its GE9X engine, built by GE Aviation, the company says it will be 12 percent more fuel efficient than any competing airplane.

Along with the new 777X, Boeing will also introduce the the 777-9X and the 777-8X. The company says the 9X will have a range of more than 8,200 nautical miles (15,185 km) and the lowest operating cost per seat of any commercial airplane, whilst the 8X will offer a range of more than 9,300 nautical miles (17,220 km). Production is due to begin in 2017, and first deliveries are expected in 2020. Now the only questions are will my favorite airlines spring for these and how much will they charge?
