Bossie Awards 2010 – best open source software of the year

Remember when Infoworld was an awesome tech mag, and not some advert spamming sleazefest of a website? Yeah shame. Anyway, they’ve just released their Bossies – the best Open Source software of the year awards, and they’re worth a look. So switch your ad blockers to max, and dive in.

Oh and just to save you hunting around the site for the actual results, here’s the four important links.

The winners are a pretty eclectic lot by and large, and as you’d expect from an enterprise focused site, a fair number of the winners are rather…ahem…corporate in their OSS-ness, and I don’t mean that in a nice way. But hey, it’s a start. At least people are starting to take notice of open source properly now.

In 2010, the choices aren’t any easier, and now there are many, many more packages available. claims more than 310,000 projects and GitHub more than 1 million. Before going much further, let us apologize profusely for not sorting through the millions of projects to find all of the very best.
