When working on various projects around the house, you’ll undoubtedly run into the need to use a soldering iron at some point. That’s why last week we pointed you to the Learn to Solder Kit. As you might know, the puffs of smoke you see when soldering are not good for you. In fact, you should always do this in a well-ventilated area, so as to avoid inhaling the fumes. If you are working in a small space, or just want to be extra cautious, you could always build one of these Mini Fume Extractors.

This little device is designed to suck air in, and through a carbon filter. The air is then expelled out the other side with a good deal of the carcinogens removed. You won’t need a lot of components for this DIY project. The main components are an Altoids tin, a fan guard, carbon filter, some wires, a voltage regulator and a 9V battery. The amusing part is that you will actually need to do some soldering in order to make the fume extractor.
