BumpTop – new 3D desktop for Windows

Bumptop

Tired of your old Windows desktop? Then why not try out BumpTop, a freeware desktop replacement which gives you full-on 3D visual loveliness? I’ve got to say I’m not a huge fan of this type of app, if only because I’ve found that they can sometimes break Windows in small ways, and there’s inevitably a performance hit from having all that luscious eye candy floating around. But if you’re into pretty, well here you go.

It’s not just a desktop skin though, there are lots of different organisational features embedded in the product which give it some real value. Document piles, real time desktop search, drag and drop printing and file moving, enhanced photo browsing (with zoom and stuff). So don’t let me put you off, give it a go, you might enjoy it.

BumpTop piles work like in the real world. Toss items at a pile to add them or pop them into a grid, flip through them with your scrollwheel or fan out a pile to quickly see what’s inside. Converting between folders and piles is seamless too…Piles are how we organize on our real desks but computers force us into rigid, hierarchical folders. Piles are lightweight, flexible and its easy to see what’s inside. Let order evolve naturally or quickly get a mess organized with a pile, you’ve got options.

  • I know pretty. Pretty is a friend of mine. BumpTop you're no pretty!

  • I like BumpTop…although, like any “PC-spice-upper”, it uses a lot of memory/RAM.
