Buzzscale – movie ratings from social media

Why is it that whenever we have an opportunity to catch up with some leisure time, there’s never anything on cable or satellite we want to watch? Or the movies are lame or the rentals are all out or we’re just plain stuck with trash TV? One way to help find out what’s good to catch is to use the opinions of others, and that’s what this new site provides.

Buzzscale is an opinion aggregation service which gathers together all the comments from social media like Twitter and (we assume) Facebook, as well as official services like IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, to deliver an opinion on the popularity or otherwise of a current movie or DVD video release.

Now we’re not exactly sure whether the fact that there are comments or tweets about a title, make it worth watching, but it’s an interesting take on the traditional critical review sites. The other interesting feature on the site is the addition of topical rankings, which means you can see specifically what people liked and disliked about a particular movie. Again, it’s not definitive, but it should give you an idea whether you may like something because of its humor or not.

The developers are apparently planning to incorporate more online conversations into the mix, including forums and other chatter to make the results even more relevant and hopefully accurate. For now we’re going to grab a soft drink from the foyer and keep an eye how this website gets on in the tough world of entertainment.
