BYD Su Rui – 28,000 people now own a $10K car which is Sci-Fi novel cool

It may not look that special, but the BYD Su Rui has something that no other car on earth has, a full blown powered key fob remote control which can move and steer it remotely. Why? Well maybe because the designers really liked the Rolls Royce in Johnny English Reborn or something?

In practical terms it means that owners can use the remote control to run over their in-laws, scare traffic wardens and do other cool things like pull out from ultra tight parking spaces at the mall.

The big surprise is that 28,000 people have already purchased one of these squirrel killers since its launch in August of last year. That’s pretty impressive, and must give cheer to all the Mercedes, Volkswagen and GM designers who still have their designs for remote control sitting on dummy models and concept cars. Or not.

The remote comes with a full touchpad for steering the vehicle, and can control the car up to 10 meters at a max speed of 2 k/ph. Apparently the car has been through a series of 30 coasting and 15 crash tests on its way to delivery, we would so liked to have been a fly on the wall for the first set of those.

The makers are saying that the $10,000 car is perfect for moving the car to your side in a car park when it rains to stop you getting wet, which is very nice of them we think. The car also comes with a heap of other electronic fancy, including a Bosch Electronic Stability System, a color video reversing system, intelligent voice reminders and an in-car cinema. We’re not sure if that’s just the expensive $16,000 model. You see where we’re going here, right?

And we’re not going to mention the space age dashboard and centre console vehicle management system. Before you go dragging your check book out from under the sofa, we’re afraid you won’t be able to buy it unless you reside in the Chinese hinterland. There are no plans as yet to export the car to the US or Europe, so the sound you can hear is the collective exhaled sigh of relief from beleaguered budget car manufacturers everywhere.
