Carbon Sinks in Australia Release CO2 – man made issues are harming natural protections

Blue carbon is the poetic name given to carbon that is captured by the vegetation of coastal areas around the world. Australia has a very large stake in this region and unfortunately, it’s releasing a lot of that carbon back into the air due to destruction.

Green areas act as carbon sinks. They capture the carbon from the air and hold it in the soil and general plant life as it grows. That’s why trees, soil, and protecting our natural spaces is so important in the fight against the climate crisis but this sink isn’t permanent. It’s only good for as long as the nature is standing.

There are many ways that these areas are destroyed. Some are just acts of nature and unavoidable. Others are man made like climate crisis related heat waves or more direct leveling of green areas for human development. Conserving these green areas is paramount in overcoming the climate crisis.
