25 Interesting Web 2.0 applications.

The Ferret will not be denied share of a trendy new meme – this shift in the paradigm, this ongoing, leveraged, value added, business oriented solution matrix. Oh no! So here, in the spirit of keeping it real, is the Ferret’s Top 25 Web 2.0 applications list. Think Ajax, think browser, think bubble. [See also the excellent eHub] Writely – online word processor Num Sum – online spreadsheet Kiko – online calendar S5 – online presentations Central Desktop – online project management Webnote…

Plasma Pencil.

The Plasma Pencil. Apparently these ‘miniature light sabres’ can kill bacteria and may well one day be in common use in dentists. Righty ho, I’m definitely going to sit there and let some guy wave one of these puppies in the direction of me tonsils. Oh yes I will.  The five-centimetre-long plasma plume is generated when a stream of helium gas containing a trace of oxygen passes between two high-voltage copper electrodes. Helium is very difficult to ionize, but the plume’s…

The Trio Bike.

The Trio Bike. Take one distinctly Scandinavian looking buggy/pram, add in a convertible bicycle which can be attached at will, and presto, travel comfort for all the family. Well except daddy, who presumably runs alongside like the good and faithful servant that he is. Around $2500.00.

Pill popper.

The PillPress. We need to start an anti-blister-pack underground activist organisation, don’t we? One which holds violent, vicious protest meetings outside pharmacies and supermarkets. NO PACKS, NO PAIN! PLASTIC PACKS KILL! FREE THE PILL POPPERS! That sort of thing. In the meantime, this might help.  PillPress has been designed to help remove pills and tablets from foil blister packaging. A large percentage of the population suffers with Arthritis and other forms of muscular weakness in their hands and finger joints. This condition…

Brilliant wristband.

Designed by Brunel University student Claire Dunne, the Brilliant Intelligent Wristband is designed to make sure that patients are given the right medicine, rather than the wrong stuff, by matching a memory chip on the drug container to it’s internal memory records of the patient. The info is then displayed on the wristband screen. This is definitely a cool thing, peeps, although it doesn’t, or course, stop someone putting the wrong medicine into the container to begin with. [Thanks Victoria]  The innovative…

Sushi heaven.

Sushi@Home. The Ferret loves sushi. You like? It’s not all raw fish you know. Mmmm…. Anyway where were we? Ah yes. At last a set of gadgets designed to take the hassle out of the home sushi craft. But making it at home is actually not that hard, as long as you have a bit of patience, some good instructions and a very sharp knife. Anyway these puppies will set you back around $60.00 or more each, so you’d better…

Open Table.com. Make restaurant reservations online for free. 3300 restaurants in various locations around the world (but not, alas, my local fish and chippie). There. Now you know as much as I do. And yes, it is super cool. And yes it will eventually take over the world. No question.   When you book a table on OpenTable.com, your reservation is instantly recorded in the restaurant’s computerized reservation book – the same one the restaurant’s host uses to track all…

Talk Digger.

Talk Digger. Probably the finest vanity tool in the world? This v cool online app from Frederick Glasson is a kind of link back search engine. Find out who’s talking about ya on the web via the major blog trackers and search engines. Mirror, mirror….?  I developed an addiction for my blog statistics and for people talking about my writings. I was always checking the link-backs to my domain name on the major search engines. As everybody knows it, no search engine is…

Google Q&A.

Among the useful tidbits lurking on Google’s Web Search Features page is the new Q&A function. Rather slick and typically Guseful.  Want to know the population of Japan? What currency is used in Algeria? The birthplace of Bono? Hit us with a fact-based question or query (like “population of Japan”) by typing it into the Google search box. We’ll search the web and display the answer at the top of your search results page. We also link to our source…

Stop thief!

This week is personal security week here on the Ferret and first up are a pair of likely lads all right. The StoppaRed UV defense spray is a thick, gooey liquid you spray on to your attacker to immobilize them in an emergency situation. 4.5 metre range and enough goo for 6 seconds per can. £17.63. A rather more bizarre option is the XMarker Personal Attack Defense Spray. £16.98. This little can of foam spray literally turns your assailant blue and temporarily blinds them. They’re then…
