Communicator D2 Dual SATA HDD Dock with WiFi – flexible, powerful and oh so useful…

The Communicator D2 Dual SATA HDD Dock with WiFi is a hard disk hub which lets you make use of all those old hard disks lying around from upgrades and repairs. I’ve been using one for a couple of months now and I’m very impressed so far with the functionality and robustness of the kit.

The package contains everything you need to become a hard disk wizard. The dock itself, plus a power supply, USB and eSATA cables and a small but well written user manual to get you up and running. Installation is simply a matter of plugging it in with the later versions of Windows, no drivers required. Drop in one or two hard drives and you’re ready for action.

You may need to read the manual to learn how to partition the drives if you’re changing their configurations and virtual drive settings on Windows Vista or 7, as it’s not easy to work out how to do that with the new Windows versions.

The dock supports both 2.5 and 3.5 inch SATA drives and will connect to USB or eSATA ports on the PC. It also comes with a multicard reader which will cope with microSD, Memory Stick and even your mobile phone SIM card (you’ll need to install some special software to get SIM backup to work properly).

So far the unit has performed perfectly with backup from PC to hard disk as well as the One Touch Backup button feature which moves data from the first hard disk to the second without PC involvement. It’s fast and quiet, with only a faint blue flickering light indicating that data is being transferred.

The only thing that is a little strange is the fact that the on-board WiFi isn’t actually what you think it is. It will not give you wireless access to the data on the dock drives, it is actually designed to add WiFi functionality to any computer you attach it to which doesn’t already have a WiFi card installed. This makes it useful for older desktop computers without WiFi, but perhaps not so useful for laptops most of which now come with WiFi as standard. It’s a small thing, but a little confusing.

Apart from that, this is a great product, and something which is hugely valuable in terms of flexibility and longevity. I can see myself using it for a long time as a primary backup tool alongside the Drobo. Priced at $92.00. A useful review.

Dual SATA HDD Multi-Function Dock with One Touch Backup+ Wireless Adapter(USB + eSATA) allows you to access two 2.5″ or 3.5″ SATA Hard disk to your computer via USB or eSATA at the same time. It functions as a 2-port USB hub and card reader as well. This is the best powerful tool for data transfer, backup and cloning for PC or MACs. In addition, it built-in a WiFi adapter(802.11n). Convenient to use!

  • Hi. Does it also allow you to properly wipe drives? That would be handy.
