Contactless Power Transmission – Japanese get closer to some wireless nirvana

Contactlesspowertransmission

Japanese researchers recently unveiled a rather clever contactless power transmission system which can supply power without wires to an object up to 60 cm away. OK, so it’s no Tesla device, but that’s still pretty interesting, especially if you consider the type of applications which could benefit from the technology. Beaming power without wires is one of those techs, like the flying car, which has always seemed so close, yet so far. One to watch perhaps?

The company had a demonstration of lighting ten 100W incandescent lamps using coils that are 60cm apart from each other. In addition, when a metal frying pan was placed between the coils, it did not heat up. The size of the coils was 50 x 50cm, and the thickness was about 5cm. Showa Aircraft Industry expects that the new system will be used for supplying electric power to trucks, whose floors are difficult to be lowered.
