Declaration of Internet Freedom – please sign if you wish to keep the Internet safe

Net-declaration

A new move has started to draft a global Declaration of Internet Freedom which aims to protect the Internet from attack by governments, commercial and industrial interests and anyone else who would try to twist and pervert it to their ends. It may sound very fluffy bunny but at its core the message is seriously important.

The Internet is turning out to be one of the most significant developments in human civilisation since Gutenberg’s printing press, and we are at a point where we need to take deliberate steps to prevent it being suborned to vested interests and those who would prefer that communications and knowledge be controlled by a few, rather than available to everyone.

It’s not just about money, it’s about the right of people in developing worlds having the right to access the same kind of knowledge as the rest of us. It’s also about ensuring that access is protected through the use of open technologies and not stifled by the demands of commercial profit through patents, proprietary products and services.

If you enjoy any part of this huge glorious web of knowledge, entertainment and communications, please take the time to sign the declaration and get involved in helping it become a global standard which stands above politics or profit. It’s our net, let’s protect it!
