Deforestation is Going Up – despite the importance of trees, we’re still cutting too many down

I think by now everyone is pretty clear that trees are kind of important in the fight against climate change. So why is deforestation STILL a huge problem? The quick answer is human greed. The bad news is that since 2014, deforestation has gone up instead of down.

Deforestation is the mass clearing of trees in forest and jungles to make way for things like crops, human homes, roadways, grazing, etc. It was a hot topic last week due to the Amazon fires caused by that very act. Areas in South America and Africa are impacted a good deal by this practice.

There is good news out of Indonesia which previously had a large problem with it. They have managed to slow the rate of deforestation and it turns out that this was due to government intervention. This is a sign that to see the same result in other countries, governments will have to step up to stop the practice before it’s too late.
