DIY Nixie Tube Chess Set – induction based board lights up your game

Chess is such a noble endeavor, don’t you think? What with all that thinking, and calculating and laughter. Lots of laughter. But there’s not a chess master in the world whose game wouldn’t improve with a decent set of playing thingies, which is where this DIY Nixie Tube Chess Set comes into play.

This self assembly kit – you need to be a bit of a genius to assemble it all probably – features 32 real ex-Soviet nixie tubes as the chess pieces, and it’s all powered up by an induction board powered by 12 volts.

The pieces light up when placed on the board, which means that your moves should have a lot more sizzle than before with this little set up. The whole thing is around 15.75″ square and comes with a full user manual. Maybe. One of a kind and so it’s priced at $770 plus shipping. [insert your favorite chess joke as a sign-off line here]

  • I love this not because I know how to play chess but the idea behind it.. Awesome.

    • Yeah it is pretty cool. :)
