EnergyEgg saves you money by shutting down empty rooms

The problem with saving money is it’s so much hard work. You’ve got to plan here, research there, hunt down bargains, sniff out deals. It goes on and on. Who’s got the time or the energy? Luckily there’s a bunch of clever people out there who are working hard to help us save cash without breaking a sweat, which is nice to know, right?

The EnergyEgg from TreeGreen is a good example of the genre. This cool little gadget constantly monitors a room to see if it’s occupied, and once it senses it’s empty, switches off all the connected appliances in the room after a user set countdown. Kind of Sci-Fi movie style.

The full kit comes with the Egg itself, and either one or a family pack of three power socket adapters which you can use with extension leads in different rooms. Plug in your table lamps, TVs, and other appliances to the socket, set up the Egg control unit and you’re set.

There’s an optional wall light device as well (which needs installation), which automatically switches off the main lights in the room along with the appliances. It’s all very cool, but the only caveat we can see is the fact you’ve got to hunt around to reset the Egg manually every time you re-enter the dark room. Bit of a hassle maybe.

Anyway, that said, it’s a nice way to help us all save energy and money without having to think about it, and we applaud the simplicity of the whole system. Each unit can handle up to 10 separate plugs, and because it’s battery operated it can be used anywhere.

Priced at $63.83 / £29.95 for the solo kit, and £18.99 for the automated light switch. Individual control units are $15.00 each.
