Europe to get standardized cellphone chargers next year

How many cellphones have you owned in the last 10 years? Now how many of those used the exact same charger? Not many I suspect, unless your phones were from the same manufacturer, and even that wasn’t a guarantee. Well if you live in Europe, this issue will be a thing of the past. Starting next year they will all be using the same charging connector.

To be specific, mobile phones will be required to use a microUSB connector for charging. So not only does this mean that one wall charger will work for any phone, but you’ll be able to use standard USB cables for charging as well. Now I know that those of you (like myself) that live in North America are wondering when we’ll get the same treatment, It will honestly be about the same. After all, many phones are released in both places, so if they’re already using microUSB ports for charging, why go through the trouble of designing a new one just for one region?

  • With this single act, I am almost prepared to forgive the EU for the decades of corruption, bureaucracy, waste and goofball decisions.

  • Hurrah! At last. :)

  • Most new telephones already come with a Micro-USB connector in Europe, so the future's already here!
