Faktum Hotels – rent a room and help a homeless person for a night

You’ve got to hand it to those Swedes, they’re definitely creative in their own special way. Not content with having the world’s first Jumbo Jet hotel, and having pioneered those weird but strangely logical ice hotels, the country has now gone one step further and launched the world’s first guilt trip vacation residence.

Faktum Hotels is not a real hotel, but it’s definitely a real opportunity to try and help alleviate the homeless problem in that part of the world. Gottenburg in West Sweden has around 3400 homeless people, and as a way to try and help reduce the numbers, some enterprising folk have set up a website marketing this fictitious hotel chain.

The mythical hotel lets anyone book one of 10 spaces throughout the city which are known to be popular for homeless overnight stays, including spaces under bridges, next to a train on the picturesque wharf or canal-side. The ‘rooms’ cost 100 SEK ($15) a night and you can either book the spot for yourself (good luck) or as a ‘gift’ for someone else to enjoy.

Of course it’s simply another way to raise money for a cause, but it’s clever marketing, and a nice way to highlight the hidden community on our doorsteps, while doing some tangible good at the same time.
