Fish Waste To Fuel – cruise ship company moving towards renewable fuel from waste

Cruise ships, as it turns out, are helping to contribute to the pollution problem. The fuel they use dumps harmful chemicals into the air and is even worse than just everyday vehicles but an alternative is coming form an ironic source. Cruise ships of the future may run on waste fish parts.

The process of preparing fish for food leaves a lot of leftovers. Things that we won’t eat, that no one would eat. They usually end up in the landfill with other garbage. Instead of just trashing them, they can be used to produce biogas, which can then be turned into a liquid and used on cruise ships.

This process will be tested be the company Hurtigruten, They have 17 total ships and their aim is to convert at least six into hybrid ships that use this natural gas as fuel. Currently three ships are under construction. If this goes well, the same technology may find it’s way to other ships and help fight the pollution caused by sea travel.
