Flogs – very cool real time online event calendar

Flogs is a very cool online events calendar which you can use to add public events and occasions that you’re interested in to your own personal calendars like iCal or Google Calendar, plus Facebook of course. You can also use it as a standalone calendar, but the real power comes from the fact that it connects with a bunch of existing online services, and is also global.

Right now there aren’t that many events on offer, but with time the service could become very useful, as other users add their interests and the calendar fills out with valuable data on things going on in your city or region. Art, culture, politics, religion, they’re all on offer, but surprisingly very little on the basics like movie times and releases. Maybe just my region?

The interface looks nice, but in fact there are also a couple of glaring issues. For one, there’s no quick way to add an additional event to an existing calendar entry, and also there’s apparently no way to lock your location into the front page search, so every time you select a category or search for a set of events you’re presented with a global result. Naff.

Apart from these bad design decisions, the rest of the site has definite promise. Connection with the external calendars is seamless and easy, and the layout of the event selection page works (although it cries out for a more Ajax type UI to save all the page switching). One to watch.

How does it work? You select which flogs (sports, music, film, theatre, games, specific subject areas, etc.) and relevant sub-categories interest you. For example: Sports > Football > FC Barcelona, or Music > R&B > Beyonc√©. With a single click, the information you request will then appear in your digital calendar. Appointments, concerts, competitions, etc. will be automatically inserted amongst your existing engagements, giving you a complete overview of your schedule!
