Freemake Video Downloader lets you download from YouTube, Vimeo and more

So you’re surfing the net, and you find a great video that you want to save. Sure, you could bookmark the link, but what it it gets taken down, or the uploader decides to make it private? Well, then you’re stuck searching around for another copy somewhere else. Your other option is to just download it to your hard drive, where you’ll always have it. Few sites make it easy to do, which is why you need special software to help you out.

As the name implies, Freemake Video Downloader is completely free, though it has the option of being ad-supported. That is, when you’re installing, you can choose whether or not to have it install a toolbar. Personally, I’d rather support them by buying some of the buttons or keychains that they have, rather than deal with a toolbar. You can also choose to install plugins for Chrome and Firefox, if you want to make downloading videos that much easier.

Once you’ve finished your download, you’ll open the program to find a nice, simple interface. If you’ve already copied the url of a video, just hit the Paste URL button, and it will fetch the video. You’ll be prompted with a few options, which are really nice. You can choose the resolution you want (if there are multiple options, such as on YouTube), then what format you want to convert it to. Your choices are AVI, MKV, MP3, iPod/iPhone, Android, PSP and 3GP. You can also choose to leave it in the original format, or just download the audio by itself.

I’ve used the software for a little bit, and tried a number of video sites, none of which I had any trouble with. They boast compatibility with over 10,000 sites including YouTube, Break, LiveLeak, Vimeo and Megavideo. However, they do mention that Hulu, Comedy Central, MTV and some others will not work. Of course, all videos on that site are copyrighted material anyway.

If you’re looking for a way to download audio or video from clips online, this is definitely highly recommended. Just remember to do the advanced setup if you don’t want to install their toolbar and have your search engine changed.
