GMail problems?

Gmail

Brian over at Gizmodo posts about problems with Gmail/Google Mail, and I have to say that he’s right. There’s something not quite right with the service. I’ve definitely noticed delays in messages coming and going, as well as messages disappearing completely in both directions. I even discovered that an account retrieval I’d set up had mysteriously just switched itself off without warning (I only discovered that my emails weren’t arriving properly by accident).

Another colleague tells me that his service simply won’t work with Google mail, so he has to use another email address in order to communicate with Gmail users. There definitely seems to be something broken somewhere, and Google needs to come clean sooner rather than later. I also wish that I could trust the spam filter a little more, there are still a few false positives happening, which I’d like to be able to flag so they get through afterwards, but there’s no way to do that. I like Gmail, shame to see these issues.

  • Google is apparently aware that there is a potential problem, or has taken preemptive measures to the bad press… I don’t know if all their answers will be “It’s the sender’s server” or if they’ll be fourth coming with an answer or a solution.

If you experience this problem you can submit the header information here, to let Google know they’ve got a problem. From the linked articles Facebook aparently is having trouble with GMail (or facebook’s mail STMP is having issues):

  • I have found their spam filter to be the top in the field. I have had no other spam filter work as well as Gmail does.

  • Few false positives, yeah. A way too may false positives, I would say. Sure spam doesn’t get through, but hey, my customers messages too.

  • last year, when I was laid off, the unemployment agency contacted me through my gmail account (my email was forwarded to gmail). The spam filter caught it and put it in the spam folder. I guess it saw that an image was attached…

Needless to say, I had to appeal their decision to discontinue my unemployment… big mess.

  • Too many false positives, mail goes missing, privacy issues… the list goes on. I covered it somewhat after having problems with members of one of my sites not receiving registration emails, turns out a lot of the “free” email providers … uh, suck, FWIW: Google’s Gmail Not All It’s Cracked Up to Be

  • I can't my gmail to come up, had this problem before… and if google tries to contact me, there's no way for them to get through to me. cause there &*^^$%$$ gmail won't work

    • Yah, apparently it is ESSENTIAL to set up a reserve secondary email address in Gmail for just this kind of emergency. There is a routine you can go through to get the problem cleared, you just have to go through it and contact Google. More info on the Google Groups site.

  • We just moved all our e-mail accounts from our own server to gmail. We have had nothing but trouble. Not able to access folders, e-mail not being received, passwords not working, server errors. Does anyone know if there is a problem with sending or receiving mail over 1 Meg?
