Gocycle G4 – the world’s most stylish e-bike continues the trend

Twelve years ago next month, we first reported on a new electric bike which was making waves. The designer, Richard Thorpe, had come out of F1 motor racing design and applied those principles to making the most stylish and downright ‘cool’ e-bike the world had ever seen. It weighed 16kgs, had a range of up to 20 miles and a price tag of £1158.  We road tested it, and then followed up a year later with a comparison test between the Gocycle and the Brompton Nano to see which foldable came out on top. In the end we decided that both bikes had their merits (cop-out) but the Brompton was probably more ‘fun’. A couple of years later we did however take the Gocycle down to show off at BBC Centre as part of our tech pundit session at BBC Radio Five Men’s Hour.

Now the new Gocycle G4 has just been announced and we’ve been looking at the specs and price.  My how things have not changed. The weight remains at 16kgs, the basic specs are remarkably similar, but the price and maximum range (40 miles) have more than doubled. Coming in at a whopping £3399 for the base model, the Gocycle is some £400 more expensive than the entry level Brompton Electric folding e-bike. That’s a big premium to pay for some fancy carbon fiber. We have to be honest and say we’re a little disappointed. We were hoping that the intervening years would have dropped the weight by half and the price by the same. Sigh. Wishful thinking. Still the Gocycle is definitely the bike for those who want to be ‘seen’ to be eco warriors.  The bike is now available on pre-order.
