I’m not a huge fan of URL shorteners, just a bit worried that they could end up breaking the web (especially if one of the popular services goes bust – update: or worse!), but this new Google wheeze is very cool.

The URL service now delivers QR barcodes if you add .qr to the end of any short URL. So for instance if you create a short URL like (which leads back to the Ferret), then simply adding .qr to make will give you one of these –

…which is a mobile phone friendly way of accessing our site. Just install a Barcode Scanner app on your smartphone, start it up, point the camera at one of these pictograms and you’ll instantly be transported to a web location without having to enter in any boring long URL or whatever. Cool stuff, and very useful for things like storing products for sale from online shops.

The Google URL Shortener at is a service that takes long URLs and squeezes them into fewer characters to make a link easier to share, tweet, or email to friends…Go to and paste the long URL you wish to shorten into the input box at the top of the page. Click “Shorten” and to the right of the box you’ll see a short URL that can be copied and pasted anywhere you’d like to share it.
