Grow It Yourself Mushroom Material – experiment with this plastic replacement

Myco Whale Sample

Plastic is pretty horrible for the environment. It’s disposable but once we toss it, the Earth has a pretty hard time getting rid of it so there’s a lot of waste filling landfills and floating in the ocean. Evocative Designs has a solution with a plastic replacement material made from mushrooms. You can try it for your own creations with Grow It Yourself Mushroom Material.

Mushroom Material is used primarily to make packaging. It’s a mixture of agricultural waste and fungal mycelium. The company doesn’t really “make” anything so much as grow it. The Grow It Yourself bag gives the average person the chance to do the same. The company hopes that by making its product available it will be able to foster innovation for other uses besides just packaging.

There are easy to follow instructions that will give the user the basics of working with the material but the imagination comes from the buyer. If you want to grow lampshades, tools, or perhaps packing that hasn’t been thought of by the company, this is the perfect way to be a little more innovative. And if it doesn’t work out, you can just toss the completely biodegradable thing into the bin. You can pick up a sample bag for $10.
