Ice Is Melting Faster Than Thought – massive losses for Greenland and Antarctica

Ice loss is speeding up and this is not great. The more ice that melts, the higher the seas rise which puts more people in danger from coastal flooding and displacement. Doing what we can to slow the climate crisis is one thing but we must all be prepared for a world where our coasts are different.

Between 1992 and 2017 Greenland and Antarctica lost 6.4 trillion tonnes of ice which caused a 17.8mm rise in global sea levels. This is not good news as it shows that the loss of the ice is moving at a much faster pace than it had been.

This may not seem like a big deal but it has the potential to change our coastlines which will cause flooding and massive displacement of people and businesses. Many places have already started to plan for this outcome. It’s a very sobering reality and a reminder of how important it is to make the changes that we can make now before things get worse.
