Iceland may have suffered mightily at the hands of unscrupulous banker types in the past few years, but now they’re striking back. The country’s new Modern Media Initiative is a legislative package which aims to enshrine media rights such as protection of sources and freedom of speech in watertight laws which will provide a haven for whistleblowers and seekers of truth around the globe. How delicious.
This action, coupled with the UK government’s avowed intent to restore some sanity to the British libel laws, could herald a new age where information really does have a chance to be free. We shall see.
The Icelandic parliament has voted unanimously to create what are intended to be the strongest media freedom laws in the world. And Iceland intends these measures to have international impact, by creating a safe haven for publishers worldwide — and their servers.
