Know My App – learn which app uses the most data on your smartphone and save money

There are two things we can never get enough of in this world. Battery life and data bandwidth. OK, there are probably a few more, but let’s try and keep this simple shall we? In any event, most of us suffer from some kind of mobile Internet data cap on our phones, and exceeding it can become very expensive very quickly. Well here’s a way to try and avoid the cost.

The free Know My App service from the Wireless Association offers up a handy rating table which shows clearly how much data a particular smartphone app uses. The ratings cover both Apple’s iOS and Android, and each app gets its own detailed breakdown so you can see which ones are real data hogs.

A good number of the most popular apps are featured on the site, both free and commercial, and the really cool thing is you can instantly see how much data you can expect to use in an average month for a particular app. This is a great way to work out how much data you’re typically going to need before you get the bill shock at the end of a month.

Of course the ratings can only offer a generic view of the potential impact, because everyone’s usage will differ, but at least you can get a rough idea of how much data an app is likely to use in various scenarios. And it’s also easy to get an idea of how apps compare one to another.

The database is not huge, but it does contain enough apps to be useful, and we’re assuming that the service and table will grow as more tests are done on popular apps. In the meantime, it’s a great way to check out those hogs and see if you can avoid overage costs as much as possible.
