Learn to draw.

Teachdraw

Michael Erickson wants to teach us how to draw stuff. Yes Please Michael! [Update:…and indeed why not check out Betty Edwards’ site and theories too? Thanks L!]

I propose to teach you the visual alphabet, and some grammar and syntax, so you CAN begin to use visual communication-in your work, your studies and in your life. The following material is my approach in a nutshell, to teaching people to draw. It is a series of concepts and ideas that when used together grant the individual the means to make pictures that communicate effectively. I can give this same material in person, in a more comprehensive form, but the essentials are all here.

  • What a load of rubbish. The *only* thing that will teach you to draw if you are not naturally gifted that way is Betty Edwards Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. This website is just a bunch of cutesy tricks, which, if you can’t draw, you can’t use – look at his stick men for god sake. Get the Edwards book, do the exercises and *then* you might be able to use this info.

  • Aah, interesting L. I’ve updated the post to reflect your comment. I’m not sure that I *totally* agree though! :-) Being a bit harsh on us wrong brain types?

  • I know from personal experience of someone who is not naturally gifted in the drawing department has tried to learn to draw. Go into any art shop and look at the “learn to draw” books – they are all like this website, lots of whizzbang stuff that you can’t even begin to get close to. What Edwards does is teach you how to see – nothing to do with technique or cross hatching or anything. Once you get to grips with how to see things in a way that helps you to draw them then you can perhaps move on to this kind of stuff which is more to do with ideas about what to draw rather than the technique of how to draw which are entirely different things. Most people are stumped by the how before they even reach the problem of what.

  • Great comments, thanks! I just ordered “The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” from my local library.
