Keychains are simple fashion accessories that I have never found a reason to buy. My keys sit in my pocket most of the time, and thus, a keychain would only be seen when I’m driving, or when they’re hanging up at home. However, if the charm provided a useful function, I might consider adding it to my key ring. Take, for example, these RJ-45 keychains that not only look geeky, but can also be used to hang up your keys at the end of the day.
If you already have the tools to make your own ethernet cables, then you have almost everything you need for this DIY project. The only thing you’re missing is a key ring. Just cut a bit of ethernet cable, take four of the smaller wires and loop all of the ends back into the RJ-45 jack. Crimp, then add a rubber protector, and you’re done. Add a wall-mounted RJ-45 box, and now you can use the plug to hang up your keys. Simple and geeky, just the way I like it.
