Meet Earl – a tablet that wants to be your hiking buddy

Meet Earl
Bringing a smartphone or tablet with you on a hiking excursion is always a little scary. What will you do if it falls in the mud, hits a rock, or worst yet…loses signal? Devices with a glass face and limited life without an outlet nearby are not the best for outdoor excursions, which is why you should look some something that is tough as you are.

Enter in Earl, a tablet that was made to see some harsh outdoor conditions. It runs on Android 4.1, has an E-ink screen, and is equipped with the latest in weather sensor, GPS, and radio communication technology. It’s dust, shock, and mud proof, and can be submersed for 30 minutes in 3 feet of water. Of course, this wouldn’t be a good outdoor tablet if it wasn’t charged by solar power, but you will need 5 hours of direct sunlight to get a full boost. Currently this is a crowdfunding project, so apply some skepticism as $249 is a lot to drop on something that isn’t certain.
