The idea of fabricated organs is the stuff of science fiction. We’ve all seen movies and TV shows where they grow a new organ in a lab before they take it from its vat and drop it into the waiting patient. This might be a reality before you know it. Scientists have grown a mini-liver and implanted it into rats. Neat.
The livers were grown from skin cells in a process that can also potentially be used to grow other organs. This process could potentially not only save lives but also a lot of money for people who are going through organ failures.
The mini livers were grown in bioreactors in about a month. They were transplanted into rats and after four days they were dissected to see how the livers were going. Things looked good for the implanted livers. This is the beginning of the trial but in the future, this could be a life changing development for millions of people.
