Mobile Security Card CL. Clever German techs Giesecke & Devrient has come up with the world’s first contactless smart card in a microSD flash card format. This means that that the card can be used with just about any modern mobile phone to provide for security access, or even contactless cash wallet functionality. One cool thing is the fact that the card gets it’s Near Field Communication power from the reader, so it shouldn’t be a drain on the cell phone battery. This is a pretty awesome technology leap actually, and could really propel the smart card forward into a new age if it works as advertised. Of course, it will make losing your phone in a cab or at a party a tad more painful than at present. Such is the price for progress, eh?
This innovation using the ultra-compact microSD format enables a multitude of onboard security applications to be implemented in cell phones or microSD USB tokens. The range of possible contactless applications includes electronic access control to buildings, electronic event ticketing and transit ticketing, and electronic passes for companies, libraries and universities. The Mobile Security Card CL can also be used for contactless mobile payment.
