MOOG Theremini – weird music machine is weird

theremini3

There’s something about strange vibratory music that makes people either run away screaming or swoon in delight, and we’re not sure which part of the brain is responsible for the effect. Take synthesizers for instance. Once the darling of the pop rocks brigade, now they’re relegated to the back rooms of Sci-Fi TV series instead of Billboard charts.

Now one of the veteran synth companies, MOOG, has come back into the mainstream (maybe) with a cute little instrument which is a cross between a synthesizer and a theremin, which is one of those weird little wavey hand devices which sound like a cat being strangled when played. We’re being unfair of course.

The MOOG Theremini as it’s called, combines all that lovely wobbly pitch stuff with the kind of wailing that theremins are famous for, wrapped up in a sleek little retro design case which looks like something Austin Powers might have brought with him from the 60s.

We’re not clever or creative enough to pass judgment on the final sound the thing emits, but we’re certain that it’s probably not like anything you’ve ever heard before. If you want to grab your early version of this magnificent machine, you’d best hurry along to the site and offer up your $319 before they all run out. Or something.
