The mind mapping folk at Neurosky – known for the MindWave range of entertainment products – have come up with another clever product based around EEG brain wave recognition. The company’s last product was Necomimi brain triggered cat ears, but now they’ve moved onto much more serious things.
The Neurocam is an ’emotion controlled’ camera that looks like a cross between Google Glass and one of those strange GoJo hands-free cell phone holders. The key to the camera is the fact that it automatically records 5 second GIF clips depending on the brainwaves of the user.
The idea is the camera records if your brainwaves indicate that you’re interested or like something. The algorithm behind the analysis was developed by Professor Mitsukura of Keio University in Japan, and then customized for the Neurocam.
Right now the rig is in prototype testing stage, so it’s basically just a smartphone strapped to a brainwave analyzer, but eventually the team hopes to make it much smaller and more ‘fashionable’, and add features like annotation to the software so people can manually embed emotion tags, or GPS etc.
It’s a fascinating idea, but we’re wondering how weird it will be when this thing is small enough to be almost invisible? Will we all walk around recording moments of emotion, good and bad, all the time? Will this be the ultimate crime deterrent? Answers on a Minority Report flyer please.
