New Chinese Texting Lane is for people who can’t stop looking at their phones [Weird]

Apparently the city of Chongqing in China feels that there’s a problem with people walking and texting, so it’s introduced a new ‘Cellphone Lane’, which is there to be used by people who are staring at their handsets as they walk. You couldn’t make this stuff up, could you? The street, actually called Foreigner Street, has a clearly marked lane, with a sign that labels them for mobile phone users.

The idea seems to be that if you must have your phone in hand, and head buried as you walk, then you should use this lane and take the risk of collision with other addicts like yourself. We think this is a great idea, and in fact it should be extended to car drivers.

If you drive while holding a Starbucks or an all beef pattie, then there should be a lane you are forced to use, so you can share the dangers of split attention with all the other similarly handicapped vehicle owners. Only fair, right?

Meanwhile watch out for a new wave of tourist lanes in major cities, which will have clearly marked ‘Kodak spots’, with two feet outlined on the tarmac, and pedestrian traffic lights so that gawkers and workers never have to mix ever again. Oh the brave new future, we salute you.

  • Nice idea, poorly executed. It’s for two-way traffic!
