New file compression miracle or not?

It’s so easy to be cynical isn’t it? Guillaume Defoss is a Belgian inventor, musician and electronic specialist who claims to have developed his own digital compression language which will ‘change the world of computing, telecommunication and Internet use.’

The Web site of his company – Millennium Gate – is currently demonstrating a Nokia 9210 phone playing a 25 frame per second movie clip taken from Sean Connery’s Entrapment. The site claims that, using his compression techniques, a full 108 minute movie can be stored on a 16MB flash memory card and played back or streamed at a mere 15 Kbits per second or less. The site makes no mention of the image size this delivers though.

Note, however, his statement under the Warning section of the site – Please keep in mind that special hardware adaptions (sic) are needed for DGS-applications.

Hmmm, fiddling about with the innards of 20 to 40 million PDAs might put a bit of a dampener on things eh? [via twomobile.com]
