Nikon D5000 – digital SLR with swivelly bits

Image

In a move that has surprised no one, Nikon has once again proved to be the master of the controlled information leak (or really bad at keeping secrets) with the release of the D5000 entry-level digital SLR. Momentum has been been slowly building over the last couple of weeks culminating with a far-from-secret film shoot. Naturally this kind of thing ends up on the internet and the photophiles get all aflutter with anticipation and each new model generating more and more interest.

Digital SLRs are the fastest growing area of digital photography and now that everyone is over the megapixel race the big two are trying to capitalise by generating new models to fill never before conceived product categories. It’s no longer just pro and amateur cameras, there’s entry level, enthusiast, semi-pro and professional models.

Back to the D5000 and well it breaks a little new ground for Nikon SLRs. It’s positioned between the entry level D60 and enthusiast level D90 and incorporates some of the features of the highend point-and-shoots. It packs a fold-out-and-swivel 2.7″ LCD screen, the same DX sized 12.3 mega pixel sensor from the D90, with ISO up to 3200. It can also shoot HD video at 720p with a built-in mic and speaker by the looks of things. Priced around £719 for just the body.

The D5000 is a powerful and versatile SLR camera that delivers superb still images and high-definition D-movie clips with sound. Incredibly easy to use, it boasts a range of automatic features that help capture the shots you want and an impressive 12.3 megapixel DX format image sensor that ensures exceptionally detailed results.
