Nissan Nismo Smartwatch – you and your car in perfect harmony?

In a somewhat surprising move the giant automotive company Nissan has joined the crowded market for wearable gadgets by announcing the Nissan Nismo Smartwatch, a device that aims to improve the day-to-day driving experience and who knows, maybe even help you tell the time occasionally.

The smartwatch is designed primarily to act as an interface between the driver and the car, and improve the wearer’s ‘behind-the-wheel‘ experience by allowing them to access various real-time stats (trip info, fuel consumption, speed and other performance averages).

In addition the watch will monitor and deliver behavior analysis, maintenance notifications, social media push notifications and offer driving tips based on analyzing information gathered from the car and the user. Quite a busy gadget!

The Nismo also features an integrated HRM (heart rate monitor) set up to act as a biometric analysis tool (as used by race pilots). This HRM will allow the smartwatch to constantly monitor the wearer’s heart rate and pulse and analyze it against the car’s real-time performance parameters and the user’s past behavior in similar situations.

The concept was first presented back in September 2013 and, while there’s no info available as to its release to the masses, we are sure it won’t take long until we see it on the store shelves. General technology has advanced quickly in the past few years, but the car manufacturers have somehow lost the pace. Some catching up is needed perhaps?

What’s your take on the Nissan Nismo? Do you feel a ‘driver’s smartwatch’ is necessary to bring your driving (read 2 hours commuting in-bumper-to-bumper-traffic) skills to the next level? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments …
