Nitrous Oxide – the hidden emission

Emissions from carbon dioxide and methane are pretty well known and people are pretty clear on the fact that they need to be lowered. There’s more than just those two out there though. Another one that causes quite a bit of problems is nitrous oxide and unlike its counterparts, it’s flying under the radar.

Most people probably know this gas but its common name of laughing gas but this is no laughing matter. Outside of dental clinics, it’s also used in agriculture to help fertilize soil. There’s not as much used as what comes from our cars and trucks but the gas is very potent and can stick around for over a hundred years.

It is contributing to our climate issues but it doesn’t have to be that way. We can limit its use with stronger regulations on the spread of it. It’s popular because it’s cheap but it has got quite the hidden cost. Regulation doesn’t have to mean ending for the gas, instead, it should focus on keeping its use between solid amounts.
