Nokia Lumia 1020 – rocking the National Geographic anniversary [Spotlight]

Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia has teamed up with the most wondrous National Geographic to help celebrate 125 years of their awesome natural history coverage, by sponsoring Nat Geo photographer Stephen Alvarez to wander across the American west grabbing photos with a Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone.

Now with any other phone we’d all probably scoff at the conceit, but if you’ve seen the image quality of the 41 megapixel camera on this handset, you’ll know it’s no joke. We’ve been playing with one for a month or two now (full review to come later) and it really is a remarkable camera in its own right.

Sure it won’t beat your Nikon DSLR of course, but when you remember that this camera sits inside a full blown dual core smartphone with all the bells and whistles, it’s little short of amazing. Here’s a quick snap we took the other night, excellent clarity with that level of road lighting (the only editing was to crop and resize).

The video below is full of majestic landscapes and sweeping vistas of course, all captured by Alvarez on the phone (even the video documentary was filmed with the camera). It’s neat all right, but what impresses us most about the camera is the fact you can get stunning shots in really low light as above. Try doing that with any other smartphone camera on the planet and you’ll come up well short.

Anyhow, take a look at the video below and you’ll get an idea of the type of thing the phone’s camera, some great firmware and Carl Zeiss optics can do. It’s pretty cool.
