Novo Digital Cinema Camera – tiny, beautiful and only available to rent

So what do you get when you take a store bought GoPro Hero3 action camera, rip off the body, throw in a bunch of new functionality including a C-mount for attaching different lenses and serve it up to the world?

Why the Novo Digital Cinema Camera of course. On the fact of it, this seems like a ridiculous project, but it exists, and the results are superb. The technicals of the camera are delicious…including adjustable back focus for extreme macro shooting, and extended exposure control for more flexibility with different lens combinations.

The designers have completely revamped the controls too, with added buttons, mounting points and improved battery pack access. The camera still retains the GoPro sweet spot though, since it copes with up to 4K, 15fps shooting, and things like the integrated WiFi is still on-board. The developers have managed to make the body 20% thinner than the GoPro as well, which is no mean feat for an action camera which was already designed to fit onto a helmet.

The key thing about this tiny adaptation is the fact that it’s designed for cinematographers, which means it accepts a huge range of accessories ranging from different lenses to full blow wireless follow focus rigs. This is an amazing piece of gear and we can see why they made it happen. What we don’t really understand is why it’s only available for rent (at $295 a day) but that must be some kind of industry thing. Or maybe they’re too hard to manufacture in bigger numbers for a reasonable sum of money.

Whatever the reason, it’s an extremely interesting tool, and we’re fascinated to see what kind of results it delivers in the real world.
