Clothes shopping has got to be one of the most painful experiences in the world, especially on busy weekends in hot, crowded stores and changing rooms. But digital technology is coming to the rescue. We stumbled on a cool little product at the IFA show in Berlin last week which now offers shoppers a reprieve from the changing room blues at last.

The NShow 3D Virtual Dressing Mirror is a floor mirror shaped high resolution screen which is designed to let shoppers try on different clothes quickly and easily without having the hassle of struggling with zippers and ties. The system incorporates a computing box, camera and some very clever software which reacts to hand gestures to give the shopper total 3D control over their fashion show audition. Our video below gives a demo of how the system works.

The catalog of clothes is uploaded and managed by the store, which can keep the items updated as necessary. Then instead of having to keep stock of products, the store can let customers ‘try on’ and purchase the clothes all from in front of the digital mirror. The customer can even buy something instantly by using their smartphone to click on a QR barcode on screen.

The mirror can work for both mens and ladies fashion, and is pretty easy to control. One of the key features of the software is the ability to display the clothes in 3D, so you can twirl around and see how the item looks from all angles instead of only the front. Very clever.

It’s not perfect, you get some strange results with some of the clothes on screen, and you can see your arms when you’re navigating around, but even so, it’s surprisingly effective in showing the results of an outfit change on the fly. And as the lady says in the demo, it’s very fast to sample a lot of different outfits.

Of course it’s early days right now, but you can easily see where this stuff is headed, and it’s very interesting. The video above also gives a quick preview of a new system the company is developing which will let you do the process at home using your smartphone and television, which takes 3D home shopping to a whole new level. Imagine being able to buy your whole wardrobe without stepping out of the front door. Scary or delightful?

The NShow system costs $5000, including a real time customer data monitoring system for your store computer.
