Hey, good news! We already have enough soil to absorb 5.5 billion tonnes of CO2 every year but we have to make choices to protect it so it can help us out. If we just leave the dirt alone, it will do the work for us but the hard part is. . . leaving it alone.
We have a bit of a problem with destroying our ecosystems in order to make room for new agriculture. It’s happening all over the world. If we halt expansion, the existing soil will go a long way to helping us overcome our climate crisis. By protecting and restoring the soil, we are creating another line of defense.
This is a worthy endeavor not just for that reason though. It also has benefits for water quality and food production. A focus on sustainable agriculture will allow us to hopefully farm as much food as we need while still protecting our natural resources.
