Overtourism – a not fun reality of the travel age

Travel is great but overtourism is a problem. Basically this is the name of the logistical nightmare of having too many visitors to tourist hot spots at once. It causes a host of issues that local governments are trying to tackle. The answer isn’t to stop seeing the world, it’s to be better about it.

Everyone wants to see pretty much the same cool things all over the world but when we all flock to them at once, no one really has a good time. It’s crowded, hard to take pictures and to even really enjoy things. There’s also issues with garbage, destruction of natural landmarks by overuse and just things like food and bathrooms. By traveling off peak season and going to visit lesser known landmarks you can help control some of these issues.

With the high environmental cost of air travel, now is an even better time to rethink dream trips. Do you want to go because you want to go or just because everyone says you must see it? Are there smaller, local venues that would be happy with your tourist dollars and you can still have a good time?
