Oysters for the Shorelines – natural oyster colonies can help push against climate change fueled loss

The coastlines are of major concern as the world heats up and oceans rise. The displacement of people will be a large issue if homes and communities along coastal lines are lost. So protecting them is really important. One unlikely candidate for hero is the oyster.

Oysters meaning, well oysters. The type you can eat. Laying down and encouraging beds of them along shores has a host of benefits in helping to keep those fragile areas safe. The oysters themselves filter and clean water as well as providing a natural way to fight erosion.

Although they’re not much to look at, the bivalves have a lot to offer in helping to preserve our natural shorelines. Obviously you don’t want to go introducing them to areas where they are not native but for places where they are, there’s no reason not to start growing them up now to shelter against tomorrow.
