Pave Guard – a new bridge deck heating system that uses solar power to keep bridges ice free – will be installed on two bridges in Missouri this summer. Patterned after the idea of radiant floor heating, this new technology will eliminate the need for corrosive pavement clearing materials during times of ice and snow. The system will automatically activate when the temperature reaches 38�F, sending heated water flowing through its tubing and preventing the concrete from freezing.
Kansas City’s Pave Guard Technologies Inc. will install the system which, experts estimate, could double the lifespan of bridges. It could also be adapted for use in places like sidewalks, driveways, car washes, parking lots and intersections prone to serious accidents during the winter months. Pave Guard can be used for driveways, sidewalks and commercial parking lots. McDonald also foresees an enormous application for bridges, which are prone to black ice buildup. Not only can Pave Guard keep bridges clear of ice, but its solar panels can power a lighting system to illuminate them in rural areas.
