Pave Guard – Innovative solar powered bridge de-icer

Pave Guard – a new bridge deck heating system that uses solar power to keep bridges ice free – will be installed on two bridges in Missouri this summer. Patterned after the idea of radiant floor heating, this new technology will eliminate the need for corrosive pavement clearing materials during times of ice and snow. The system will automatically activate when the temperature reaches 38F, sending heated water flowing through its tubing and preventing the concrete from freezing.

Kansas City’s Pave Guard Technologies Inc. will install the system which, experts estimate, could double the lifespan of bridges. It could also be adapted for use in places like sidewalks, driveways, car washes, parking lots and intersections prone to serious accidents during the winter months. This fantastic innovation will help save lives, is low maintenance and helps the environment. Pretty cool. [St Louis Business Journal]

Pave Guard can be used for driveways, sidewalks and commercial parking lots. McDonald also foresees an enormous application for bridges, which are prone to black ice buildup. Not only can Pave Guard keep bridges clear of ice, but its solar panels can power a lighting system to illuminate them in rural areas.

  • Its the future! Cities like Sheffield grind to a halt with a few flakes of snow, and the councils are getting sued for not gritting the "sidewalk".

  • Very pleased with this site, the details would be an asset to so many people, I will be spreading the word. Thanks

  • I was researching with a client and was surprised to find that there is an active warrant out for the owner in Johnson County, Kansas, wherever that is. It's there for all to see at the Johnson County Sheriff's Warrant Division web site. No thanks!
