Penovino makes it trivially easy to engrave onto metal, gift shops and police rejoice…

It’s a sign of the times that we’re now becoming obsessed with marking stuff. Whether it’s for gift purposes (‘your name engraved…’) or for security, we’re increasingly finding ways to ensure that our name, trademark, logo or other details appear on items we own or sell. The trouble is, while it’s easy to do on materials like cloth and plastics, it’s much harder to do properly on metal. Sure you can use a cheap Dremel or other engraving tool, but have you ever tried getting a complex logo looking good with one of these things? Tricky.

The new Penovino is designed to make it trivially easy to put your mark on metal the way you want, and in seconds. The system is based around a pen sized electro-etching device which uses electrolyte solution and an electrical current to etch the metal to 1/10 thousandth of an inch deep. You need a stencil of course, and the company provides ready-made ones for letters and numbers or you can have custom ones made for your particular needs. You’ll also need a small bottle of the electrolyte solution to dip the tip of the ‘pen’ into.

The whole kit costs $230.00 and custom made stencils are $1.00 each. We suspect the product will be very popular with small businesses (e.g. knife and tool makers), hobbyists and security forces of all sorts.
