Piena – the world’s first automatic baby formula maker, exhausted parents take heart….

Any parent will know that at some point coping with baby’s demands gets to be grueling, to say the least. Early morning diaper changes, feeds and just general routine maintenance may not be that difficult in themselves, except that after a while the sleep deprivation really starts to catch up on you. Unless you’re Marissa Mayer of course.

Anyway for the rest of us, there may some hope in the deepest gloom of a cold dawn morning, with the arrival of the world’s first automatic baby formula maker, the Piena Tender Touch. This little doozy heats the water to 212 degrees and then cools it to the perfect temperature for baby’s little mouth and tum. Then with a few turns of the wheel you dispense the right amount of formula into the bottle, shake and test. The whole process, according to the blurb, takes under 2 minutes for a 4 oz standard bottle.

Where you stand on the baby formula milk issue depends a lot on your views on natural vs science we guess. For those in the blue corner, any attempt to remove a mother’s right to breast feed is tantamount to child abuse, whilst those in the other camp see formula as a valuable addition where, for whatever reason, the mother cannot provide nature’s own resource as needed.

As for this engineering wonder, we’re going to remain a little skeptical until we actually see how much hassle it is to set the thing up before you go to sleep at night. If it’s anything like those automatic Teas-made machines, which were supposed to deliver an early morning cup of tea as part of your wake up alarm, then the thing is likely to get used a couple of times, then shoved back under the bed because it’s just too much hassle.

Maybe we’re being a bit cynical? It looks as though the thing is going to cost around $150 a pop, which also makes it a lot more expensive than a plain old bottle warmer, and since the product is still in crowdfunding mode on Indiegogo and seems woefully short of target with just 24 days to go, we’re not even sure it’s going to exist. Although a certain little birdie did tell me that it will definitely go to market with or without the crowd’s backing.

Anyway, take a look at the rather smug – and definitely not tired – young lady demoing the product and make up your own mind. We’ll just turn over and go back to sleep like usual.
